  • Worsted weight yarn (2 colors)
    • Red Heart Super Saver in Medium Purple (Color A)
    • Red Heart Super Saver in Dark Orchid (Color B)
  • Size H(5mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
st(s) = stitche(s)
dc = double crochet
FPdc = front post double crochet
BPdc = back post double crochet
YO = yarn over

Gauge:
9 rows and 15 sts = 4” square

Notes:
Colors:

You will use less than a full skein of Dark Orchid and 1.5 skeins of Medium Purple, each skein is approximately 364 yards.
Attaching New Colors: Continue to the last stitch in the row before you are changing colors. Work the final stitch until you have 2 loops on your hook; instead of yarning over with your current color, drop that yarn and cut it leaving a 5-inch tail. Yarn over with your new color (leaving a 5-inch tail) and pull that yarn through the 2 loops on your hook. Continue the pattern with your new color. Tie the tails of both colors together to secure.

Special Stitches:
FPdc: YO; insert hook from front to back to front around dc post (vertical bar) of st and draw up a loop; (YO and draw through 2 loops) twice.
BPdc: YO; insert hook from back to front to back around dc post (vertical bar) of st and draw up a loop; (YO and draw through 2 loops) twice.

This stitch pattern is worked in multiples of 6 + 5

Instructions:
Color A, ch 89 (keep an even tension)
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook. 1 dc in every ch to the end. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc). FPdc around each of next 2 dc; *BPdc around each of next 3 dc, FPdc around each of next 3 dc; repeat from * to end of the row. Turn.
Rows 3-20: Repeat Row 2.
Rows 21-40 (Color B): Repeat Row 2.
Rows 41- 60 (Color A): Repeat Row 2. Fasten Off.
Each color block section should be about 24” wide and 8” long.

Finishing:
Weave in and trim ends. Block if desired.

Rustic Felted Crochet Pillow Pattern

11/19/2017

Picture
Skill Level:
Beginner

Final Measurements:
12” square

Required Materials:
  • Worsted weight (#4) wool yarn (I used 1 skein of Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool in the color Birch Tweed) the skein is approximately 348 yards and you will use most of the skein.
  • Size G (4.25mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Pillowcase
  • 8 ounce bag of Fiber Fill

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet

Gauge:
19 rows and 19 stitches = 4” square (before felting)

Notes:
Yarn Choice: I highly recommend using the yarn listed in the required materials section; however, if you decide to use a different yarn, it must be at least 75% animal fiber (wool, alpaca, etc) and not super-wash or your pillow will not felt properly.

Instructions:
Ch 56 (keep an even tension)
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in every ch to the end of the row. Turn
Row 2: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch). 1 sc in each sc to the end of the row. Turn.
Repeat row 2 until piece measures 24 inches (approx. 120 rows).

Seaming (Sides):
Lay the piece on a flat surface and fold it in half so the foundation row and last row line up. Cut a piece of yarn about 80 inches long. Attach the piece of yarn to one of the bottom corners of the piece with a slip knot. Using a yarn needle sew up the edge of the pillow to close the sides; repeat on the other side. Make sure your rows are lined up evenly and you are pulling your stitches tight so the sides are securely closed.

Felting:
  1. Fill your sink or a bucket with warm water.
  2. Gently submerge the piece in water and let sit for about 10 minutes or until the piece is completely saturated.
  3. Lift the piece out of the water and gently squeeze to get rid of excess water, just until it is not dripping. Do not twist or ring, be gentle.
  4. Place the piece in a pillowcase and tie the pillowcase closed.
  5. Place the pillowcase in your dryer with 3 towels and run dryer on high for about an hour and a half or until piece is about 80% dry. This part might require some experimentation as everyone’s dryers are different. I recommend checking on the piece every 20 minutes to see how the felting process is going. It is better to not felt enough than to felt too much. You can always repeat the process to get the desired effect but if you go too far, you cannot undo what has been done.
  6. Once the piece is about 80% dry and felted to your liking, reshape it and lay it on a flat surface with a towel under it and let it dry completely.

Stuffing:
Stuff the pillow with fiber fill until it is as full as you want it (I used about half the bag/4oz).

Seaming (Top):
Cut a piece of yarn about 80 inches long and attach it with a slip knot to one of the top corners of the pillow. Using a yarn needle sew up the top of the pillow to close.

Finish and weave in all ends.
